Dr. Bartos challenges the oversimplified assumptions of pre-modern women as legally and socially inferior, politically powerless, and lacking of independent authority. Through case studies of religious patronage, land control, and expressions of personal piety, the nuanced roles and influence of women in shaping medieval society are explored.
