Joseph Marion Hernandez was a successful leader of soldiers in the Seminole War and a plantation owner in North Florida. His story provides an interesting view of the times when Spain was departing Florida and the young United States was taking on a new territory that would become a state. He was the first Hispanic American to serve in the United States Congress.
