The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) is the federal law that regulates minimum wage, overtime pay, recordkeeping, and child labor standards for employees in the private sector and in federal, state, and local governments. The FLSA may appear simple on the surface, but compliance can be complicated. This session will provide an overview of the FLSA and best practices for employers.

Learning objectives:

  • Explain the purpose of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA);
  • List common violations of FLSA laws;
  • Distinguish between exempt and non-exempt status;
  • Name the 4 main exemptions from the FLSA - executive, administrative, professional, and computer employee;
  • Summarize the tests that must be met to qualify for each exemption;
  • Explain meal and break time as it relates to federal law and discuss best practices.
